MARTIN SÖDERBACKA | GUITARIST

About

Martin Söderbacka is a jazz guitarist and composer based in Finland, described by Jazz Guitar Today as “one of Finland’s finest jazz guitarists”. Bit by bit, he is establishing himself as one of the most recognizable guitar voices on the Nordic and European jazz scene.

Martin has released six albums of original music in different lineups — most recently the electric guitar album The Big Sky, preceded by the jazz guitar and double bass duo album Northern Sky. An active presence on the Finnish jazz scene, he has performed alongside numerous prestigious artists, including John Stowell, Viktoria Tolstoy, Tom Ollendorff, Joris Roelofs, David Lyttle, Felipe Salles, Lorenzo Cominoli, Daniel Sommer, Siim Aimla, Joonatan Rautio, Jukka Perko, Manuel Dunkel, Olli Soikkeli and numerous others.

Martin combines the traditional sound of the archtop jazz guitar with effect pedals, creating vast soundscapes that range from sensitive, emotional improvisations to virtuosic solos. His songwriting carries the sound of the North — broad sonic landscapes and a distinctive tonal language. He composes music for his own groups and co-leads several bands with his wife, bassist Eevalotta Matikainen.
