Artist feature on Jazz Guitar Today

I was featured in the number 1 American Jazz Guitar magazine Jazz Guitar Today. Got to do an exclusive interview with Joe Barth about how I started out playing guitar, about my influences, gear and much more! I’ve been reading their magazine and online content for some years now and really love how they cover interesting news, albums, music, gear, jazz guitar international and more. Go ahead and check it out on www.jazzguitartoday.com

Thanks to Joe Barth and JGT for the nice interview, it was a pleasure and an honor!

Also shouts to my friend, jazzguitar maestro John Stowell, for your kindness.

Out now! ”Ruska (Autumn Colors)” -single by Eevalotta Matikainen & Martin Söderbacka

New single ”Ruska (Autumn Colors)” by Martin Söderbacka & Eevalotta Matikainen available on all streaming services March 3rd!

I wrote this song in the fall when nature displays beautiful colors in Finland. The name ruska refers to autumn foliage which is extremely beautiful here where frost hits the trees in September – October. However this is the melody and vibe I got from gazing at the colorful spectrum outside my workspace window.
The song is performed by Martin Söderbacka & Eevalotta Matikainen aka. Söderbacka-Matikainen Duo. We recorded this track in our home studio and I did a few overlays of soundscape guitars to give the song the right autumn feel. This song was actually recorded at the same time we did the tracks for the album ”Christmas” which was released on CD late 2022. Hope you enjoy the music!

Martin Söderbacka – guitars
Eevalotta Matikainen – double bass

I wrote this tune when I first heard that the old elementary school where I attended as a child was beeing closed forever due to funding issues. The following morning after I got the news, I woke up with this melody in my head. I picked up my guitar and a few moments later the song had come to life from the fond memories from my childhood and also from the thougth – as one chapter closes another one begins. I feel as an artist that political decisions like this does affect people on many levels. And as a songwriter/composer this is how it sometimes happens – in minutes! Other times you need to work on the music for several days to get it where it needs to be.

The tune was recorded in one take at ELive Music Studio, here’s the video of the recording session on Youtube

The story about the school still has a pretty happy ending though – the school building was sold and found new owners and started a new chapter as an event center. Maybe I’ll be performing there one day… 🙂

Cheers
